I would think that once the insurance company paid the distillery, they shouldn't have any say in what happens to the product.

Then again I have tried Pappy and didn't care for it.

The way insurance works - once they pay out a claim on a theft, they take ownership of the goods. If the goods show up again, the goods are the property of the insurance company to do with as the insurance company pleases.

In this case, it sounds like the Van Winkle company preferring not to auction off product of a questionable lineage. That's understandable.
