Becoming a US Citizen
« on: February 09, 2012, 08:25:42 am »
As y'all know, I'm originally from England, which makes me a foreigner.

Not for long, though - this Monday, Feb 13th, at 11:30AM, I'll be at the Federal Court in Amarillo, swearing my oath and becoming a US Citizen.

A couple of folks have said they'd like to come along, so I'm posting the info here.

It's: US District Court for the Northern District of Texas,
205 E 5th St
US Courthouse, B6.
A kitten told me to do it.

I remember a time back in the late 1700's when this country was great.  Full of ex-englishmen.  So you have a lot to live up to.  Congrats.   :rockout:  No doubt in my mind you make a great citizen.  I am going to try and make it.  But if I don't after they swear you in that's when you can tell them how you really feel.

I think you'll find that it's spelled "jerbs", Forrest. ;)

Thanks for the kind wishes, folks, it means a lot. I had to study The Constitution to get this far, and I really I liked what it said.

I just don't understand why y'all keep electing folks who seem to hate it.

Congrats.....

I feel very proud when good folks come to the United States and become a citizen.

I know another fella pretty well who became a citizen.  Another thing (besides us electing folks who hate the Constitution) that's sad is that a person who passes the testing to become a citizen will (generally speaking) know more about the USA than the average person born here.

Anyway...... congrats and I'm proud for you and for the USA to have you.

We may not have all the warm fuzzy stuff in our constitution like "social justice" guaranteed like superior, more enlightened countries such as So. Africa.
But I have no doubt you could put half of our Supreme Court Justices to shame with your knowledge of the Constitution.  Your persistence getting this far and for your commitment to be a US citizen is inspiring.  Good luck come Monday and congratulations.  Try not to set off the metal detector at the courthouse.

Thanks everybody! I figured I should report back, for those who don't hang out in the shoutbox.

As expected, I swore my oath on Monday and became a US Citizen. I didn't feel any different, at first, but then they sang The Star Spangled Banner and I realised that now it was my National Anthem - so that made a difference.

Then I left the courthouse and went straight to the airport. Got on a flight to Denver and stayed the night in a hotel. At 8:30AM the next morning I was in the Passport Office and by 11AM I was walking out with a shiny new US Passport in my hand. The folks there were all so friendly and helpful that it didn't feel like I was dealing with government bureaucrats at all!

Got back to A-town in time to take the wife out for a nice dinner. Champion!
A kitten told me to do it.

Now days, I think you have to have one even to visit Canada or Mexico.
